The Story Of Nant Barns
In Spring 2009, Paul and Kim were in search of a small cottage in Mid Wales that they could use as a bolt hole for weekend retreats. As they headed home from a day of viewings they spotted a “For Sale” sign in a field by the side of the road. Turning off the main road, to explore what was for sale they discovered two stone derelict barns. The idea of finding a bolt hole was suddenly transformed into the realisation of Kim’s childhood dream of converting a stone barn with views overlooking the sea!
The purchase of Nant Barns was completed in 2009 but it took a further 10 years for the build to come to fruition. Finally, in February 2018 the build began in earnest, the aim was to complete the conversion by New Year 2019. However, the buildings had other ideas and a number of the stone walls collapsed early on in the project, creating a lot of extra work for the builders and architects. The team had to redesign the interior of Elk and they were able to create the amazing open plan kitchen, lounge, dining area, with the stunning oak beam.
On Monday 18th February 2019 the barns were handed over to a delighted Paul, Kim and family by Meilyr Evans in the presence of Daffyd Tomos and Catrin James (the architects). The barns were given a successful “test run” on April 12th 2019 by Paul and Kim’s family and friends. The barns first official guests visited on May 3rd 2019. The project is ongoing as more improvements and landscaping are planned.
The People Behind Nant Barns
The owners
Paul and Kim have three grown up daughters. Family has always been at the centre of their life, having fun and creating memories is very important to them. When they saw the derelict stone barns near Llwyngwril they realised that they had the opportunity to combine their love of family, the great outdoors and their passion for property. It was an exciting opportunity to create two beautiful barns which retained the character and history of the original agricultural stone buildings within a stunning landscape that could be enjoyed not only by their own family and friends but by others too.
Our builder
Meilyr Evans’s company M L Evans Darowen Ltd are based in Mid-Wales. The attention to detail was incredible, nothing was too much trouble, Meilyr and his team took great care and pride in providing a high quality building for people to enjoy for generations to come. It was a real pleasure to work closely with Meilyr throughout the project, we cannot recommend him and his team highly enough and we hope that we will have the pleasure of working with him again in the future.

Our architects
George and Tomos Architects were the company we chose for the conversion of Nant Barns. The main architects for the project being Dafydd Tomos (founding partner) and Catrin James. It was a delight to work with them both, from the original on-site concept meetings for the buildings to the final product. The team had a great understanding of what we were trying to achieve, the clever use of small spaces and their knowledge of converting stone buildings was invaluable in the process of turning our dream for the site into a reality.
